New Finally Things to See and Hear

This is a very fast post because someone forgot that he needed to be somewhere very early this morning, though I don’t think anybody’s going to mind! You’re here for idols, not Maniacs!

So you remember Finally, yes? Recent-like debut and all that? Well here they are with their second song/MV and if you’re into piano-driven rock songs with nice hooks like I am, you’re going to dig it:

DAIDAIDAI Has the Perfect Concept and the Goods for their New Album

I know we Weekendered it a while back, but it’s entirely possible that people — silly, fallible lumps of loosely organized flesh that they are — either have forgotten or are somehow not at all aware of the fact that DAIDAIDAI, one of the most unique and exciting acts in this entire scene, has an album coming out in basically no time at all now. I’ve been excited about since the day I heard about it! Imagine being aware of what this group brings and not being excited.

And so there was the move by producer-san, it seems, for DEMON TAPES decided to drop the first proper promo for the album on Valentine’s Day, and I’d have missed it completely if not for a bit of research last week. The thinking is sound, right, like of course a Sunday in the middle of winter when people are much more worried about their SOs is the best time to slide out new music that will gin up interest in your album. I am in absolutely no way being sarcastic! But anyway, this is awesome and exciting: Continue reading

Here’s That Kamiya Saki Solo, Finally

If you’ve been keeping up with GANG PARADE this year, you might remember around the time Brand New Parade was released that leader and marathon expert of WACK, Kamiya Saki, won a group-wide competition for her own solo song. If you forgot that was a thing, so did Saki herself, apparently!

Anyway, here it is.

The New DAIDAIDAI Sounds Like Exactly What I Want from DAIDAIDAI

That’s right, friends, I’m talking maybe my favorite idol thing from my favorite idol scene, in reverse order the very intense and/or wild collection of misfits in Osaka, and DAIDAIDAI having emerged from that mess all the way back in 2016, carrying on the very unique sonic+idol legacy of Utena Yuki and PSYBOU KANOJO. This I write in dang near ever post about DAIDAIDAI because, damn it all, the history is important and the relationship between excellent ongoing projects must be acknowledged.

Anyway, DAIDAIDAI had, as once might expect after about three years together, a chunk of the membership graduate recently, and with that a simmering down of the old system while things retooled. Or, at least, as I surmise, because if I hadn’t checked in on them this morning, I’d still be unaware of these goings on because that’s what happens when you’re still afraid of the huge info crush of turning your notifications back on! However, yes, the graduation thing, that was known, and so you connect dots when you check in and OH LOOK A NEW THING!

Promising on the art alone!

Well that’s certainly exciting, and terrifying. And we get a preview version via short lyric video! Continue reading

PassCode Saw It Fit To Gift Us a New Song, Praise Be

I figure that Papermaiden’s going to take the daily post title award, so I’ll just riff on her concept and completely reject her blasphemy this time by flipping it around and saying YEAH THANKS SANTA THIS IS JUST WHAT I WANTED!

Or, I guess it’s more appropriate to say, PassCode, I’ve been missing you, why don’t you come in, there’s pie and cider and yes, we’re all annoyed with him too, I got him extra drunk on eggnog and now he’s sleeping it off, oh for me? for all of us! Why, it’s exactly what we need to kick this traditional holiday get-together of people in ugly sweaters into high gear! I’ll just put this right on for everybody to enjoy! Continue reading

Well This Is a Whole New Style for SPARK SPEAKER, Ain’t It?

I have this terrible sinking feeling that there’s a full-on MV for this happening at any minute and I’m going to have some egg on my face, but that’s fine, I needed to have posted this a few days ago anyway.

SPARK SPEAKER! The hard-charging at times surprisingly melodic unit that you either love or don’t yet know that you love is … well, that whole “a few days ago” thing, they actually released their second full album today, and they published this lyric video to get you hype, and they just so happen to be rolling out some adjustments to their sound. Plus or minus, you decide:

At Last, Some Dang APOKALIPPPS!

Would anybody be mad if, say, you were at dinner with friends, and the discussion turned toward idols (as it naturally must), and people started to talk about their favorite chika supergroups (happens every day!), and that special someone turned to you and asked for your opinion on APOKALIPPPS, and, after weighing the likelihood of a call-out should you try to fake your way through this one the same way you did when appealing to the dominant in-group and its devotion to Local Sports Team #2 (we all know how that went, guy, how do you endure the humiliation), you decided that discretion would be the better part of valor and, smiling, admitted that you had never actually heard any of APOKALIPPPS’s music? Yes, Lord Stuffedshirt would no doubt pop out his monocle in feigned, overwrought shock, but that guy’s a jerk and everybody knows it, so who cares, it’s that special someone whose opinion really matters here, and look! It turns out that the question went to you because you know so much about idol and they were hoping that you knew more about APOKALIPPPS than anybody else might!

That’s some fortuitous circumstancing right there, friend.

That’s* an incredibly long way of implying that APOKALIPPPS, who were announced with a certain degree of fanfare almost a year ago, finally have dedicated own-channel material online, and I actually wrote this before listening to it, so let’s take that journey of discovery together, shall we? Yes, I’m Hype for the New STARMARIE

In case you couldn’t tell by now, you guys, I’m making a very deliberate effort to mix things up a certain extra amount ever since my entreaty that we all get more diverse in the idol that we follow. The next exhibit? Motherhubbard STARMARIE, that’s who. Yes, the longtime fantasy-aligned rock idols have themselves a new album coming out next month, and they teased out the first track the other day:

And Here’s le biglemoi with the Best Thing Happening This Week

You guys remember le biglemoi, right? Briefly just about the coolest dang thing to happen in the middle portion of the year, loud but also going with a darkened tradol look, they fell into the ever-predictable Westerners’ trap of Oops We’re Good but Also Missed Doing Something for a Week and Now You’ve Forgotten about Us. It happens a lot!

Anyway, they’re cool and good, but I’d nonetheless completely lost track of their existence — ironically so, as you’ll discover in the Weekender — to the point that they weren’t even in my Check This Weekly list anymore. And that’s a shame, because this is the kind of work that le biglemoi is capable of producing:

I love nonsensical English lyrics in idol songs

Amazingly? This isn’t on their Twitter feed (yet), and it’s as yet not promoting any particular release; it’s like management expects that fans will all be subscribed on YouTube, that their notifications will work (they never do) and then they’ll do the dirty work of telling each other about the thing. Which, funny, that’s how I know about it (thanks, PIH), and also I would never dream of trying such a thing (/cough), but additionally also is an inexplicable way to do business for (presumable) money.

Regardless, there’s a song here! Continue reading

The New Futari Opposite Is Ska-riffic

Jordan found this wonderful little snip, and it was exactly what I needed.

That’s such a wonderful little burst of goodness, I don’t even have anything else to add. We knew that there was a lot of promise in Futari Opposite, and here’s a nice example of it; they’re clearly willing to go in a lot of directions, so word.
