10 Most Disturbing Idol MVs in History
Last week, we published a piece recommending dark idol units for new alt-idol fans discovering the genre through Phantom Siita. The response to the post reminded me that not everyone has spent the last decade+ obsessing over and chronicling the alternative, independent, and underground idol scene. Especially the number of people who were hearing about JyuJyu and “Noroi Hajime” for the first time got me thinking: there may be a sizable number of people out there who aren’t aware of some of the other iconically disturbing idol MVs that can traumatize them for life.
For that reason, Team Homicidols put our collective heads together and compiled the following list of the 10 (+1) most disturbing MVs that are seared across our psyches and helped send our therapists’ kids to college. Please note that our recall (and judgment) may be less-than perfect, so let us know anything we missed or got horribly wrong over on the Homicidols Discord server.

Yesterday was Idol Valentines Day, one of the top twelve idol holidays, just behind Idol Thanksgiving, Fox Day, and Idol 4th of July (which is, strangely, held on August 3rd). As I saw lots of idols tweeting “Happy Valentines Day” to their fans it reminded me that I have gone almost two years now without a Kami Oshi (since the graduation of Ling Ling in June 2023 to be precise). I have decided, on this Idol Valentines Day, it is finally time to open up my heart and find a new Kami Oshi. Since, due to this blog, I follow over a hundred different idol units, that means I have several hundred idols to consider. It may take me a few weeks to make a short list, and I might need some help winnowing things down. I will let you let you know.

6 Dark Idol Units for Fans of Phantom Siita
Phantom Siita is in the midst of their first world tour and, by all accounts, are drawing audiences from a pretty diverse mixture of subcultures. Members from the fandoms of Ado, anime/anisong, J-culture, and underground idol are all converging as the rookie unit exposes the world to their macabre yet elegant take on retro horror. The end result has been a lot of people getting exposed to alternative idol for the first time and rarely a day goes by lately that I don’t see a post on reddit or Discord along the lines of:
“I’ve become a really big fan of Phantom Siita. Are there any other dark-themed idol groups out there that I might like?”
The answer to this question is, of course, “Hell, yes.” Phantom Siita is one of the newest entries in a long, dark, rich (and, quite possibly, cursed) tradition of groups that lead, as Ado put it “…a heretical existence in the idol industry. Frightening and beautiful, making you want to reach out even though you know it’s scary.”

I don’t include too much personal stuff in the blog as I don’t fancy myself as any kind of “influencer,” and I also assume that you all have enough to worry about with your own lives to be burdened with any of my petty, personal concerns. This week, though, I figured I should mention that I’ve been dealing with some fairly significant health issues since just after Christmas and had a related procedure earlier today. I mention this as I am compiling this post under the lingering effects of sedation, so that’s the reason for any poor edits, errors, or omissions. For once, I have a verifiable justification for the poor quality of this blog, so I figured I should take advantage of it. Of course, if you don’t notice a difference between this and previous issues of The Weekender, that just means my writing is the equivalent quality of someone half-stoned on medical grade sedatives. Either way, I think I lose, so I am regretting writing this preamble at all.
