The Whimsical World of Dempagumi.inc

It’s been a while since we’ve checked in with that idol powerhouse, ey? Throughout changing trends and saturated markets, Dempagumi.inc have proven themselves to be a rock in the idol scene – but much like actual rocks, their appearance has taken many forms.

…Okay that metaphor really sucked didn’t it. Something about erosion? Erosion changes rocks over time and they have a lot of new members now. Look, the new single is good and it being a very Dempagumi take on some rock n’ roll feels like an appropriate time to re-introduce them. Let’s take a deep dive into “Shoudouteki S/K/S/D!”

Your Homicidols Guide to TOKYO IDOL FESTIVAL 2021

Tokyo Idol Festival 2021 kicks off this Friday (aka “Thursday”, depending on what part of the world you reside in). This year, TIF will take place in front of live audiences again after 2020’s fully online festival. The iconic HOT STAGE, SKY STAGE and SMILE GARDEN are welcoming otaku back, this time with plenty of COVID protocols in place. For those of us who still can’t make it over to Odaiba, livestreaming ticket options are, thankfully, once again available.

The big question then becomes: is it worth shelling out $50 per day (or $130 for all three-days) when even Homicidols’ favorites with major label deals like Yanakoto Sotto Mute or three-time TIF alum BLACKNAZARENE didn’t land an entry on this year’s time table? Even established, alternative standouts like You’ll Melt More!, CYNHN and meme tokyo have been relegated to single 15-minute slots on the Nico Nico IDOL SHOWCASE among regional units and trad newcomers.

Your Homicidols Weekender #253

It’s the weekend before TIF and over here at Homicidols house we’re all still bracing ourselves for a world without BURST GIRL. I’d say it’s been a rough year for disbandments but, let’s get real, it’s always a rough year. That is the ephemeral and transitory nature of idol, the genre we have voluntarily consigned ourselves to. But even with the ever looming sense of loss, we also reside in perpetual hope, for every time idol shuts a door, it opens a window.

Because, sure, one day we might lose a beloved unit, but the next day someone like CHICKEN BLOW THE IDOL comes back!!

ATARASHII GAKKO!’s California Collaboration Bears Fruit with “Pineapple Kryptonite”

ATARASHII GAKKO! have a dropped a new MV and launched the world-wide distribution of “Pineapple Kryptonite”.  Pineapple Superman is not amused.

The MV sees the New School Leaders battling a dog-napping space alien in a Southern California setting (I’m not sure how it survives MIZYU’s twin tail helicopter attack) while the tune takes them to some new musical geography as well. The verses of “Pineapple Kryptonite” are a moodier take on AG!’s signature blend of piano funk, acid jazz and hip hop before transitioning into a surprising, liquid drum & bass chorus. This is an ethereal, soulful vibe we’ve not experienced from the Leaders before.

All Good Things Explode: BURST GIRL Announce Dissolution

In the latest episode of “COVID Ruins Everything”, BURST GIRL’s international debut has been postponed to never.  The strongest and most crazy punk idols have unexpectedly announced that they will be disbanding two weeks from now on the third of October. While three years and eight months is not a bad run for a fully self-produced, self-managed idol unit, for many of us (and the world at large), the end is coming far too soon.

Like many of you, we eagerly jumped on the BURST GIRL bandwagon from the moment of their creation having known Boss Rei, Miyako, Rinchama and Yurapico from the legendary indie-punk unit and Heaviest Idol in The World, Guso Drop.  When manager and producer Daichi-san announced Gudro’s disbandment because he couldn’t figure out how to make money with the group, the four idols must have decided they could do a better job than that, and took things into their own hands.  Continue reading

Your Homicidols Weekender #252

It’s been a packed week for me with work and school and fancy idol blogging. Our visionary founder is still off on his honeymoon and Team is starting to realize that, between the six of us, we can almost do the work of one Maniac.

In addition to working on refreshing some of the static content around the site, we have started the planning for the annual Best of the Year competition. We are up to 179 potential candidates for Best Single alone, so things might get a bit nuts . I can’t wait!

In the meantime… Continue reading

Chip Chop! – Nerun Poku Poku’s adventures with blades and potatoes

It’s a busy time for You’ll Melt More!‘s Nerun.  Fresh from releasing a new mini-album and MV with the rest of the group, she has seemingly undergone successful separation surgery from her conjoined twin Nani, with whom she was formerly fused at the kawaii, and has now launched a solo project – Nerun Poku Poku – with three simultaneous singles.

ASP Comes Through Your Front Door

We’re a highbrow publication, so the headline about the group called ANAL SEX PENiS was kept tasteful once again. So without further ado let’s get right into talking about those wild WACK girls who love to prove they’re anything but pusillanimous – this is “the MAN CALLiNG,” so you’d better answer!

YOU’LL MELT MORE! Break Out and Celebrate 47 Cities in the East!

We’re fast approaching a new era for Yurumerumo! as Kechon (A founding member!) and Chiffon (A member since 2013!) prepare to graduate in October! Let’s face it, it’s a seismic shift for this legendary idol unit as it passes the torch to an entire pack of “Pupil More”s. Nani and Nerun, who only joined last year, are going to be the veteran members! So the next year of YMM! will be one of growth and finding their footing as the unit steps up into something new and also continues the legacy of the past.

So here we have the first live-action MV featuring all the fresh new upstarts, and what is quite possibly the final video for Chiffon and Kechon.  The song is called “47 Cities in the East” and it’s just what we love about this group. Let’s watch!

Your Homicidols Weekender #251

Welcome to week two of the Dae Era of Homicidols. So far I’ve managed to do a little maintenance on the navigation menus and updated the About page.  Nothing too exciting, but it’s all about progress not perfection, right? The highlight of my short tenure in the captain’s chair by far has been when, for the first time ever, Pour Lui liked one of my tweets. Now I’m worried that I may have peaked too soon. My apologies if it’s all downhill from here.

Many other things happened this week in idol (both good and bad). Here’s some of it:

Juju made a very excellent video and you should watch it.
