Your Homicidols Weekender #419

American Thanksgiving is just past which means that we have officially entered the Western holiday season. For the Homicidols calendar, that means that it’s time to kick off the annual Best of the Year awards. Nominations are now open, so please be sure to let us know who you would like to put forward for consideration between now and December 15th.

While we in the US were having Thanksgiving, our friends in the UK were celebrating a different festival of gluttony and consumerism: WACK in THE UK, Volume 4 featuring ASP, ExWHYZ, and MAMESHiBA NO TAiGUN TONAIBOUSHO a.k.a. MONSTER IDOL.

It is Time to Nominate Your Homicidols Best of the Year for 2024

2024 had some historically depressing low points so, once again, thank Kami-sama for the alternative, underground, and indie idols whose music, videos, shenanigans, and live shows keep us all from hitting rock bottom. As per usual, the sheer volume of superb material we saw from our idol oshi, their colleagues and peers over the past twelve months was simply overwhelming. This is why we here on Team Homicidols turn to the community this time each year.

As always, we desperately need your help in identifying the nominees for consideration for Homicidols’ Best of the Year honors.

We’re just checking in to make sure that you haven’t been crushed by the tsunami of Black Friday advertising and let you know that preparations are well under way for the annual Homicidols Best of the Year season. Nomination will be opening next Friday, so start scouring your playlists for those songs, albums, and MVs that helped get you through 2025.  As evidenced below, some artists have waited until the last minute to submit their best entries for considerations. AiNA THE END is being particularly strategic and dropping what looks like a monster of an album this Wednesday, one of the final days of eligibility. It will also make a great Christmas gift, so if anyone was wondering what to get the most tolerable chika idol blogger on their list, the Limited Edition ships worldwide!

Your Homicidols Weekender #417

We are in mid-November and usually barreling towards winter except, this year, the temperatures are still summery and the leaves on the trees around here have yet to change color. Mount Fuji didn’t even have any snow on it until last week. As we enter the era of climate-change induced dystopia, rest assured that one thing about this time of year will remain a constant: the coming of Homicidols Best of the Year Season!  We are just in the initial planning stages now, but look for more details in the coming weeks.

Your Homicidols Weekender #416

It’s been a pretty disastrous week, especially if you happen to be like the members of Team Homicidols or the artists that we celebrate and support, the vast majority of whom are women and/or LGBTQ+. I don’t like to dip into politics on the site much, primarily because idol is a place that many people go to escape the disappointing and often depressing realities of the world. In fact, as the US election results became clear earlier this week, I tried to think back to how I mentally persevered that last time we were confronted with similarly distressing circumstances in 2016. That’s when I remembered that much of my psychological survival was due to immersing myself in the world of Japanese independent and underground idol. So, if there is anything good to come from events of November 5, 2024, it may be that they have ensured at least another four years of Homicidols.

Homicidols Live in Japan: Part 2

I have been back home from my 19-day excursion to Japan for a couple of weeks now and it’s taken me an unconscionably long time to put this report together. There are a few good reasons for that. Not only did I have to recover from jet lag while immediately readjusting to work life, but I also had to withstand the culture shock of readapting to a world without light fluffy bread, rich earthy coffee, deep soaking bathtubs, and idol lives every day of the week.  Of course, the primary reason that it has taken me so long to get this report out the door is that the post-travel blues are REAL. Whenever I sat down to write this post, the feelings of nostalgia where overwhelming and sent spikes of ennui straight into my heart. It’s been a few days since I finished off the last of the seasonal Kit Kats and Miyashima honey cakes, so I think I am finally ready to complete this article. All-in-all, the transition back to everyday life in the States has been pretty rough.

Your Homicidols Weekender #415

Happy Halloween! Sure, Halloween was a couple days ago on the calendar, but here at Homicidols we celebrate the alt, underground, and indie idols for whom Halloween is every day.

Case in point: one of our most closely watched rookie units this year is the retro-horror themed, Phantom Siita who, strangely, have not spent their first year of existence behaving like freshmen.  I mean, how many indie idol units hold their debut live at the Budokan? The group  continues to act like storied veterans announcing their first world tour including several dates in both North America and Europe.
