50 YMM MVs Day 37: Madchester

I have this mental image of  YOU’LL MELT MORE! and their staff sitting around a big round table with a turntable and giant stack of records, taking turns putting things on and spending time as a collective to listen to everything. With each new spin, they explore and consider genres that they have and haven’t tried musically yet…

“Hey, how about the Specials?”  “Well, we’ve played around with ska just a little already, but we’ll keep it in mind.. Maybe we’ll revisit a two-tone thing later.”  (Spoiler: They Do.)

“Never Mind the Bollocks?”  “Arrgh that’s so obvious, let WACK have that one..

“Hope I don’t regret this, but what about the Grateful Dead?”  “Hmmm, y’know, a hippie thing might be fun, but can we get a little cooler than that?”

Then Chiffon reaches across the table, picks up a record, checks out the bright, vivid cover intrigued. It sparks a memory of YMM!’s bi-weekly movie night at Kechon‘s place….

“Hey, remember that one film we watched…. I think it was called “24 Hour Party People”?”

“THAT’S IT! Hallelujah!!!”

And so YOU’LL MELT MORE! recorded the “Hippy Mondays” EP….. and became the first (and I’m pretty sure the only) idols to pay tribute to a brilliant but short-lived era of music born out of Manchester that promised to build an exciting new world of multi-cultural togetherness, but was ultimately doomed to implode under the weight of it’s own drug-fueled, self-destructive hedonism…

Oink Meets World – PIGGS and Their Mona Lisa Smile

You’re one of the most legendary idol performers to grace the stage and everything is going perfectly and then your group disbands. So next, you’re one of the most legendary idol performers to grace the stage and everything is going perfectly and then your band disbands. So after that, you’re one of the most legendary idol performers to grace the stage and everything is going perfectly then you lose a diet challenge and leave your group. AND THEN you’re one of the most legendary idol performers to grace the stage and everything is going perfectly but then your group disbands. So finally, you say fuck it and decided to make your own damn group.

Everyone say “HALLO PIGGS”!

Sheer Madness: NECRONOMIDOL Graduation Turns Into All-Star Reunion

My apologies for the lateness of this article, but I am still picking up the pieces of my shattered mind.

There was nothing to prepare us back in March when Rei, Michelle and Okaki, the last remaining original member of NECRONOMIDOL, announced their departure from the group. Just as there was nothing to prepare us for the blight that has since afflicted the entire world, driving us into our homes, delaying the three members’ graduation show and, meanwhile, wholly transforming the way idol lives are both performed and delivered.

This past Saturday night, Rei Imaizumi, Kakizaki Rizaki and Michelle were finally able to hold their long-delayed graduation live to both an in-person and streaming audience.

I Just Want to Put It on Record That Satanic Punish Owns

Playing a lot of catch-up these days, friends, and doing the kind of idle Twitter browsing that used to be my calling card. It’s nice to reconnect, although going back much further than, like, a week is a fairly significant endeavor. The tlist is long, and even individual group accounts can get voluminous.

But anyway, doop-dee-doop, just cruising along the other day and — hello, what’s this?

50 YMM MVs Day 35: Annoyances

I was very worried when, in early 2018, You’ll Melt More! announced a best-of album.  For an idol group that had been going as long as they had, this is often a way to wrap up their career.  Maybe to counter that impression, they released an EP of new material on the same day: the HIPPY MONDAYS EP.  Naturally, they made an MV for every song on it and first up is Okoranai de (Don’t Get Mad).

Your Homicidols Weekender #188

Happy weekend, ya dorks! I do hope that Team forgives me just snatching up this Weekender intro without an ounce of grace or forewarning. It’s been too long! Good lord. I honestly just wanted to flex in the space a little bit. Stretch my legs. Have a cold one while the week of astonishingly mundane idol weirdness unspooled in front of us, and nod approvingly.

It was good, honestly, the first full week back in the saddle. I frankly expected to do a lot more but made a botch of my own personal time management (surprise!). But do I have an exhaustingly large list of things that I’ll partly return to to post about but mostly consign to Weekender throwaways or, worse, the memory hole? Absolutely! That’s how we roll around here. I will say this — with a new attitude and approach, I did not expect that I’d see so much idoling and want to share it. Plus, you know, pandemic stuff.

So what are you kids up to this weekend? Live streams? Protests? Whatever it is, I hope you stay safe and healthy. Americans have predictably completely screwed up this pandemic, but Fiancee is the kind of person who won’t tolerate not doing things for very long, so I look forward to being masked and gloved in the typical local summertime heat. I will say, though, that the upshot of states basically forcing business to re-open has been the complete relaxation of laws against drinking in public!

That’s Not a Good Thing

Oh god. Oh god yes.

50 YMM MVs Day 33: Percussion

Day 33 people! Y’know, the number 33 kinda resembles the number 88 and maybe that’s rather fitting as we check out the MV to “Aruku no osoi inu”, which is translated as “The Dog that Walks Slowly” in the westernized digital release. While the previous couple of MVs played it kind of wholesome, this one is significantly not like that at all, making the violent opening in “Idol ID” look like a bake sale. Well, there ain’t no cookies or cakes being sold here…

Let’s Discover Some Idols: INUWASI

So I’m drifting through idol media these days like a half-aware drunk, and let me tell you, friends, it’s a weird feeling. I won’t tell on myself so much as to name names here, but I’ll admit to seeing a particular group’s photo, and seeing their name, and being like, wait, I know what that is, wtf is that though? And then I looked and I’d written like 10 posts about them. Never do a hiatus, I guess is the rule here.

Anyway, lots of new/ish groups out there, and I figure that I always used to at least try to cover them, so why stop now, and also hey neat there’s also stuff that’s almost a year old that I never got to before! THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS.

Which brings me to INUWASI (Twitter), who I got to by slipping and falling off of a NEMURIORCA tweet and seeing a completely different idol set when I came to. But yes, they’re also part of the Maple.Inc family, and so have more than passing similarities to MAPLEZ and etc., and oh no they debuted in like February. Oh that’s awful. Cheese and rice, can you imagine? You’re up there idoling your ass off and there’s like only 10% of the usual sweaty wota dancing in surgical masks as there’d usually be? Terrible. And then everything gets canceled or moved online? Woof.

At the time of my discovery, not-ol’ INUWASI had a couple of live clips to enjoy. I use the verb conditionally, as “different strokes for different folks” for sure applies here. Let’s start with the better of the two:
