I Want to Be in a Q’ulle Dance Video

Note: I do not dance well

Yes, friends, it’s time for the quarterly revisiting of things Q’ulle, which I am relieved to say has not yet been obviated by Yuzuki’s solo spelunk into extreme metal. When we last left our heroes, they were riding their own kind of Avex-era high, doing theme music for what looks like a very 90s kind of TV show. A few months later, their first digital (Avex) single is releasing …

… and there’s the ever-essential, uniquely Q’ulle package of video products to promote it. Continue reading

Kerrie Interviews Idols: Maison Book Girl

You know, it’s funny. The other day, I was looking at my old Maison Book Girl tweets. I was trying to find one specific tweet but I also found this, from almost two years ago:

Well, then. Imagine 2018 Kerrie telling naive “never attended an idol gig and probably never will” 2016 Kerrie that, not only did she get her UK tour, but she also got to have a chat with Maison Book Girl too!

It’s been two weeks since I attended the first leg of Maison Book Girl’s tour, at Birmingham’s Hare and Hounds. Hopefully, that was enough to process my feelings that wasn’t just “I would sell my soul for their smiles,” but really, it was such a wild ride. Arriving about four hours before showtime, I got to see the makings of an idol gig, somewhat. The soundchecks, the debates between the UK and Japanese staff, the occasional MBG popping in and out. As mundane as it probably would have seemed to a veteran, to me, it felt surreal and unforgettable. Up until now, I had only seen the public view of live shows.

I’m not too good at reviewing live shows, but I know that’s not really what you came for. Again, after witnessing the various test-runs beforehand, when I watched the final production come alive on stage, I was fascinated. Continue reading

This Woltanative Release Deserves More Attention

I see that I’m not the only person to be celebrating the new MV release from MAPLEZ sister group Woltanative, which is fantastic, because while this isn’t a group that I’m normally going out of my way to celebrate, a few recent disappointments have me feeling more expansive about idols to feature and good stuff to talk up.

And this is pretty good! Or, more appropriately, Woltanative is pretty good, and this is a double-plus-good track with a really cool MV:

HAMIDASYSTEM, Episode 2

It’s time again, children, for an installment in 2018’s single most interesting idol performance project. Today, we get SODA’s song and story. Gird your loins for more delicious post-rock-gaze-haze-dream-whatever, for it is indeed beautiful, and makes a wonderful accompaniment to the text (below):

When Ladybaby and Ladybeard Got Back Together for a Minute

Ladybaby’s renewed, Rei-less form didn’t, I think, need to call back too hard to the group’s point of origin — it’s written all over everything they do, ever — but given that what seems like a fairly successful first release includes a third track, and hatchets can be buried and money made, it’s clear that we could all live our best lives if the updated roster could maybe get together with ol’ pal Ladybeard for an MV.

The trailer is here. I stared at my screen and contemplated whether to post now or wait; my dedication to the gods of chaos won out.

I have no comment whatsoever.

IVOLVE Made It Better

Some idols get boring after a while, to the loss of us all; others keep getting more and more interesting, and it’s a neat journey to go along with.

IVOLVE, who are normally just the sort of idol that’s worth following for occasional updates, are making cool and good positive growth moves, and that warms me right the hell up.

For instance, their second single, releasing next week:

Great, BiSH Is Boring Now

That is the lukewarmest of takes, amigos, and it’s just about all the GAF that I can muster; and speaking of muster, when the most exorcised about “HiDE the BLUE” that I could get for the Weekender was to acknowledge that, yes, they’re just making “Orchestra” on loop until people make them stop, you know that I’m pretty much out of GAF.

Also case in point: This happened yesterday, and seeing it filled me with zero urgency.

Well that’s nice. It is! It’s a very nice, easy ballad, with a heartwarming MV. It’s also disappointing and — sadly, I know this because I tried to get through it plural times to convince myself that this was worth the time, and gave up in the middle of the second attempt — boring! Kerrie Is the WACK Idol Nostradamus

Well, that happened.

Much like the rest of the western WACK fandom, my feelings on this are complicated, but I think it can be summarized in three main points:

  1. Oh, Watanabe, please, stop feeding me so much Friday Fun fuel, I just made a WACK fun last week!
  2. Whatever happened to “I can’t handle more than four groups,” now you’re going to try your hand at running an entire UK Secondary School too? Good luck.
  3. CALLED IT.
