50 YMM MVs Day 7: Aardvarks

Hey there Meltyiacs! (Oh, we’re not using that has a fan name? Umm, how about “More!rons”? Okay, okay, we’ll talk about it later…)

Yeah, so we’re seven days into our 50 YMM Days Project! That’s like a whole week! That brings us this delightful song with the easy to remember title OO”.  (Pronounced as “Oh-Oh”) There’s a lot going here that I think is open to interpretation, so let’s get right to it and check this out…

So once again we’ve got another MV without any members of YOU’LL MELT MORE! in it! The notion of leaving out the group in what’s essentially a promotional video is pretty bold. It’s gotta be a testament of faith in Yumerumo’s quality musical output that one would be willing to use this an opportunity to create a short film instead of taking a much more conventional route. If you know the song is good, then why not?

Your Homicidols Weekender #185

Happy weekend my friends! I see #stayhome restrictions have loosened many places,  but I’m still writing from isolation so the weekends still blur into all the rest of the days. I also haven’t been able to manage any shipments form Japan for the last couple of months but, lucky for all of us, the artists we admire keep finding ways to create and deliver new content through the Internet tubes.

FRUN FRIN FRIENDS continue to make our world a better place with the power of vaporwave aesthetics.

50 YMM MVs Day 6: Muted

Turn your speakers up for this one, and not just because it’s an ace tune, but because it seems to have been uploaded with the audio at about a quarter of the volume of the rest of their songs.  This is annoying when watching a playlist of YMM! songs but what can we do?

50 YMM MVs Day 5: Yakiniku

Welcome to day 5 of our one-by-one exploration of You’ll Melt More!’s prolific output of music videos! I’m personally learning a lot myself from this project, both about the group and little fragments of Japanese society as well. Much like the first video we covered in this this series, “SWEET ESCAPE”, here’s a little glimpse into the life of Japanese social culture . The song is called “Sukiyaki” and while the idols do actually appear in this one, they mostly take on a support role to the main character, a seemingly lonely guy grilling some tasty meats…

50 YMM MVs Day 4: Bonding

Hey it’s day four of “50 Days of YMM MVs”, a deep-dive analysis into 50 music videos (as of this writing) by YOU’LL MELT MORE!! We’re still pretty early in the group’s history at this point, when the group had eight(!) members, including what I’d consider the “core” of the group that we’ve come to most closely associate with their name. This song is called “Sayonara Bakachan”, let’s check it out…

One thing I’m enjoying already about this project is the opportunity to revisit these earlier tunes when YLMM! were still very much under the radar for a lot of folks, and I’m including myself in that statistic. At this point, I had heard of the group, but really hadn’t checked them out with an attentive ear yet, which I’ve since come to realize was my loss during that period. Let’s face it, they were always good from the beginning!

50 YMM MVs Day 3: Depression

Give it up for day 3 of our You’ll Melt More barrage! Let’s get right into it:

The video to “Tora yo” (or “A Tiger” if you’re using Spotify and have to deal with the forcibly translated names) is honestly incredibly simple: the girls pretend to play guitar against a matte background.

50 YMM MVs Day 2: Backwards

After introducing themselves to the wider world with a music video that didn’t feature the group at all, we finally got to meet the You’ll Melt More! roster in the video for Mokoyou Attitude (Thursday Attitude), the first MV from the January 2014 mini-album Hako Melt More!”, a collaboration with the band Hakoniwa No Shitsunaigaku.

50 YMM MVs Day 1: Fahrvergnügen

Okay, here’s the opening round of our 50 YMM! MVs in 50 Days bonanza! Let’s dive in…

The raw rumblings for the genesis of a whole new take on idol music were still fresh in 2013.  BiS and Babymetal certainly got most of the attention as this breed of bolder, more diverse artists came to light, and perhaps it might be forgotten or even unrecognized by some that YOU’LL MELT MORE! had been formed in 2012, which is understandable because not only were they underneath the pop radar, but they were testing the waters drawing from an even deeper, more obscure niche than the aforementioned groups.

We’re Doing 50 YMM MVs in 50 days

ゆるめるモ!  You’ll Melt More!  Yurumerumo! Ewe Rue Merry Moor!  However you say their name, and the last one’s probably just me, everyone’s favourite genre-hopping popsters have sure made a lot of music videos in a career in stretching over more than seven years – weathered veterans in idol terms.  It’s difficult to pin down a total depending on what you count as a proper music video but we reckon there’s about fifty.  Probably fifty-two by the time you read to the end of this article.   And because we here at homicidols dot com love You’ll Melt More! we’re going to spend the next six-and-a-bit weeks talking about every single one.
