It’s here, it’s here, it’s finally here! DAIDAIDAI has been promoting their exceptionally well-titled new record for what feels like half of my life at this point, and they dropped that teaser earlier in the week and it was all JUST GIVE ME THE WHOLE THING and now it’s only a week way, and if you need convincing to stream and buy the thing until you are literally incapable of hearing anything else, here’s the actual lead with an actual MV I’M SO EXCITED OKAY:
There are literally thousands of active idol units at any given time, and hundreds that are within this community’s general interest, and a subset of them that may cross into three figures that dispenses with the more typical pop or rock or even hip-hop sounds for various digital genres, so we’re not talking about a huge sample size here, but I’ll happily bet against anybody foolish enough to contend that DEMON TAPES hasn’t been the source of the very best work in that space, period, ever, going back to whenever they first tried it out, and that DAIDAIDAI isn’t the current master of the form. Everything they release is so far beyond so mundane a measurement as “good”, and their overall artistic output is so unique and well-crafted that I legitimately wish I could get some of these videos into the playlists of the cool Zoomer kids who are emerging as tastemakers for the new generation. This is music that the world needs!

“Oh heck, it’s just about the end of the month, we must have a new NELN MV coming any minute now!” said I to myself on Thursday when I was trying to do a lot of productive work and instead kept needing to stick my head into Twitter and managed to scroll through long enough to see a NELN tweet. And of course I was excited — have you seen what NELN does? — and really hoped that they’d drop that this morning so I could fold this post into the Homicidols Time that comes on weekend mornings. Good morning! I hope you all had a good week. Idol certainly did, though this is one of the most random Weekenders to ever be randomly put together (hint: they all are), so you might not think at first glance that we’ve been in this little period of heavyweight releases and brain-splattering action. Relative to our own recursively self-referential scene, that is. Good stuff, and plenty out just today to sink our teeth into. And that’s all I’m going to say because I want to start covering that stuff and then get the heck out into proto-spring before winter decides to hit us with another friggin’ ice storm!
So the Word Made Flesh herself, First Summer Uika, ex of BiS and BILLIE IDLE and Lui’s YouTube Dungeon and hanging out with Pharrell and being secretly married for years has spent the last year and change becoming like a real-deal celebrity. Those of us who especially appreciated Uipon’s contributions to idol and culture and our very lives nodded knowingly — yes, of course, this brilliant dynamic personality is impossible to ignore and full of the kind of magnetic energy that is essential in modern mass media — but I think there are still a few fools out there in the world who are either unaware or unappreciative of her majesty, and so to them I present the first solo single from First Summer Uika as evidence that you better stan and you better do it now before all the other kids make fun of you for being a poser:

Yes. I’m in deep like with traditional heavy metal of late, and I always like proggy stuff, so please do mass produce this at a slightly more intense pace than the ‘rona vaccines and inject all of it directly into my veins. I don’t know if you all are familiar with just-barely-pre-metal band called Coven, but I feel a lot of similarities between the two, all deep, murky, clearly esoteric and mysterious hard rock/metal … well, Coven did have a woman singing, but she notably only did cleans, the coward. I know we Weekendered it a while back, but it’s entirely possible that people — silly, fallible lumps of loosely organized flesh that they are — either have forgotten or are somehow not at all aware of the fact that DAIDAIDAI, one of the most unique and exciting acts in this entire scene, has an album coming out in basically no time at all now. I’ve been excited about since the day I heard about it! Imagine being aware of what this group brings and not being excited.
And so there was the move by producer-san, it seems, for DEMON TAPES decided to drop the first proper promo for the album on Valentine’s Day, and I’d have missed it completely if not for a bit of research last week. The thinking is sound, right, like of course a Sunday in the middle of winter when people are much more worried about their SOs is the best time to slide out new music that will gin up interest in your album. NECRONOMIDOL’s new album — first full-length with the new lineup — is just days away, and you know what that means: IT’S LEAD SINGLE TIME. I know we were all kind of shocked when The Breakup happened, and then intrigued as the new group took form, and then everybody had their own opinions about “santa sangre” but this particular development, this new album, has felt like the part that we’re all most eager for. You like when Necroma dominates your soul and grants you immortality just to inflict as much agony as possible for all time, in song form!

Good morning! Or, if you live in (say) Texas, I really do hope that you’re having a good morning because power has been restored, your pipes are unfrozen and imminent threat of danger is no longer necessarily a thing at home. What a week. We had two separate “storms” here in the National Capital Region, one of which was billed as It Will Ice So Much That Your Trees Will Come Down (note: trees still standing) and the other, the tail end of the system that obliterated the aforementioned Texas and many other points in between because we didn’t get the polar vortex, went from OMG 8 INCHES OF SNOW AND ICE to me scraping less than 1 full inch of icy slush from the driveway. I love myself some good winter snows and we haven’t had much in that way the past few years, so … get your act together, Mid-Atlantic Winter.
Big week in idol, too, which is going to seem like a weird thing to say because this isn’t the thiccest Weekender we’ve ever put on, but there are a whole mess of posts to follow because basically everybody chose the past handful of days to put out things that we’d want to talk about in much more depth than, well, the Weekender. Well by now you’ve likely seen that Malcolm Mask McLaren dropped their new single and gave you an MV, and if you’re the kind of smart person that you no doubt are as a reader of Homicidols Dot Com, you’ve seen it already because my long promotional missive on MMM’s behalf either eased any remaining doubts OR reconfirmed the exceptionally astute biases you have for them, and you were aware of this release the second it happened.
