“HA HA HA HA HA!” cackles Ano derangedly as the MV for Furuete Yomigaere (Shake and Revive) begins. “HA HA HA HA HA!” agree the others, and from this unhinged opening, the song only gets more demented. This, the lead track from the Solitude and Counterattack EP, was You’ll Melt More!‘s first new material for eight months and was a sweet, flaming hell of a comeback.
Dressed in bedraggled overalls (the costumes were designed by the members themselves), the group take you through a bewildering array of unexpected and unexplained scene changes: from a darkened warehouse, to a disco lit train carriage, to a classroom and back to the warehouse. Similarly the music frequently switches tempo and time signature, through impelling rock, groovy claps and unbalanced screaming before climaxing in a hypnotic, feedback-drenched call and response repetition of “Dou suru?” – “What will you do?” To which the obvious answer is “Listen to it again!”
As is often the case with their music, the song was written to evoke the work of a group that Taichi, their producer, likes. In this case it was American mathcore metallers The Dillinger Escape Plan who similarly play fast and loose with rhythmic convention.
Hopefully though, unlike the singer from the band above, we will never see a YMM member do a poo on stage at the Reading Festival.
