You’ve Got Till The End Of The Week To Watch Chiaki’s Adventure In Kansas City!

I need to revisit the tale of Chiaki Mayamura’s adventure in Kansas City one more time to make sure you don’t miss this opportunity. As you know the story by this point, Chichan did not get to perform at Naka-kon due to the current situation with Covid-19,  despite having traveled to the USA for the big weekend. Undeterred, she utilized the empty venue to stream a live concert anyway.

The time of day for the show was a bit awkward and no doubt difficult for many in the West to commit to watching in real time. But fear not, if you missed it, the video stream is still available to watch.

So look, if you still haven’t checked out Chiaki Mayumura and don’t know why I’m devoting all this type to her appearance in the US, THIS VIDEO WILL EXPLAIN ALL. Chiaki is quite successful in Japan, but still a bit of blip on the radar on this side of the ocean, and I feel quite certain that she possesses the heart, soul, and charisma to win over just about anybody. If I can’t convince at least some of you to become converts to Chiaki, then I have no choice but to declare my self an utter failure at this whole evangelist thing…

Okay, if you’re still here, I’m hoping you watched a little bit and you’re seeing what I’m getting at. This concert is so fun and yet so surreal with it’s empty hall and giant acoustics. She sings her heart out here and is absolutely amazing. I can only imagine how great it would’ve been to see an audience respond to her talent, her stage presence, and hilarious oddball sense of humor. The part where we see her wander around the auditorium, interacting with some foam heads standing in for the crowd, is truly a snapshot of this very strange year.

The video will remain available on Youtube for a week, which I’m assuming meant a week from the show, so I’m guessing you have until Friday to take in all this genius.

Even before all this drama took place, I was excited about this appearance and looking forward to hearing about it. I have to say the idea that a beloved Japanese idol was making her Western debut in Kansas City absolutely fascinated me. It’s like a reverse Wizard of Oz! And then when the convention was postponed, I was still incredibly curious about just what Chiaki would be doing with her freed-up schedule in Kansas. And in true form, it appears she throughly enjoyed her stay there, and she did the sort of quirky things one would expect from her…

Playing drunken Uno…

Pointing out sewage drains…

I have no context to explain this…

This is what I love about Chiaki, she took the whole frustrating, even slightly terrifying event and made the absolute most of it, and in turn she still gave us all something to enjoy and smile about in some very dark and uncertain circumstances. I’m more convinced than ever that Chichan is one of the most talented artists in the entire world right now.

Oh, and an extra bonus: If you have access to Apple Music, a helpful Japanese fan has compiled a playlist of the songs Chiaki performed during this set! It’s a great introduction to her music catalog…
