500 Weekenders published over the course of 500 consecutive weeks. If you do the math, it works out to just over nine-and-a-half years. That is nearly a decade of spending Friday nights digging through the dark, chaotic, endlessly weird and wonderful corners of the alternative, indie, and underground idol scene to deliver this synopsis each Saturday morning.
When The Weekender first started, groups were disbanding and re-emerging in new formations and under new names faster than we could keep track of, and most of the MVs were live performance clips and badly lit dance videos that looked and sounded like they were shot on a toaster.
Nothing has changed.
What also remains a constant in this beautiful, chaotic mess of a sprawling scene is that the raw creativity and magnetic appeal of the idols never wavers. The ever shifting groups and lineups may be as transient as cherry blossoms, but the sheer talent, DIY hustle, and sincere efforts behind the units and the music that they create remain bulletproof.
Idols have an unmatched ability: whether it’s a tiny basement stage or a massive arena, they can turn any room into the center of the universe. That hasn’t changed in the last 500 weeks and let us all hope it never does.
A few things are different all of these years later. Machine translation has improved in leaps and bounds, and idols moved away from a reliance on physical media and embraced streaming which has made their music much more accessible to fans overseas. We also now have the Homicidols Discord server where a dedicated community of opinionated wota help us unearth and share all of the global happenings in this ever-changing and madly productive genre. It takes a village to keep track of all of the new releases, tours, debuts, graduation, and reboots so a big, “Thank you!” to everyone who contributes. We wouldn’t be able to keep up with all this stuff without your help.
Most of all, whether you have been here since Weekender #1 or just stumbled in bewildered, “Thank You!” for reading Homicidols Dot Com. The idol kami have blessed us in our 500th week with many pleasant surprises for the Oshifound Corner, so be sure to read to the end.
