And Thus Ends DISDOL

It happened so quietly that it wasn’t until Idolatry hit me up the other night that I had any idea that things were amiss:

Yup. DISDOL called it a wrap. Or, more specifically, called it an end to idol and the full transmogrification into bandhood. Continue reading

I Feel Okay about DISDOL’s Next Generation

So yeah, somehow the least upsetting last live of the past week was the best attended:

I had been bullish on DISDOL’s reboot basically from the jump, simply because they’d been trending down as a project for a year and had been dropping members of prominence for almost as long, so I assumed that there were bigger institutional problems etc. Maybe that’s true, maybe not, it doesn’t matter; after they released that transitional video, I would’ve been content to write off the whole thing.

No need! Continue reading

It’s DISDOL’s Old-to-new Swan Song

YouTube has a new trick, apparently, where they just group a bunch of stuff into a playlist for you if it’s from what you follow. I look at the Zenkimi thing? I get DISDOL too! Plus a bunch of stuff that I don’t understand!

But we’re here for DISDOL. When we last left our heroes, they were on the verge of breaking up (happening in just over a week now, damn) and being replaced by newer, younger members who’ll front a band and be a little less idol but probably a little more DISDOL, if you know what I mean. Sad! But at least the originals get to go out with an actual MV to hang their hats on:

And with the newbs in support?

What the Flippin’ Heck, DISDOL?

Doop-dee-doop, strollin’ through Twitter … hello, what’s this?

Well shut the front door! Continue reading

Check out DISDOL’s New Single A-side

Happy Thursday! And happy Hurtsday! This is usually a spot for celebrating the loud and gnarly on the homi side of idol, and there are some good go-tos out there — Guso Drop, PassCode, (until recently) FRUITPOCHETTE. And, traditionally, DISDOL, who’ve been bringing your idol-inflected old-school “heavy metal” into the scene for a couple of years now. Coming up to speed, after some membership shuffling and leadership changes, they don’t quite look the same, and, as Terry shared in the group yesterday, they don’t quite sound the same anymore, either:

Revolution in the Brain!

New DISDOL Is Great for Thursday Hurtsday

Gosh darn, you guys, was I aware that DISDOL had a single coming out next week? I feel like I wasn’t — the last thing I remember being aware of was Airi’s graduation after having been an idol for literally half of her life — so this was a nice surprise when Pure Idol Heart waved it at me the other day:

This is actually one of the B-sides, if I’m looking at the info on the single correctly, so interesting that it’s what they’re putting out as a promo. Might there be an MV on the way? It only took forever and a day for them to give us “VICTORIA” last year, after all. Continue reading

Tsuji Airi Is Leaving DISDOL

I never know how many of you guys dig on DISDOL, but they’re among my personal guilty pleasures, and I’ve always enjoyed the big heavy sounds in their music and the fact that they have like 73 members* and the slightly badass way they present themselves.

A few months back, their old leader, Takahashi Natsumi, who graduated to focus on her gravure and solo musical careers, putting … Tsuji Airi in charge. But now:

You don’t have to read it; it’s sad

You Review Things: DISDOL | “HARERUYA”

Dofphoto has another gift for you! And very well-timed, as DISDOL crept a bit into the wider homicidol consciousness over the past week, and darn it, that makes me happy. Personally, I’m dying to know if HARERUYA is any good.

My first experience with DISDOL (they were called Dissenter Dolls back then) was back in March 2015, which I’m pretty sure was their debut on stage. There were four girls and they only had two songs, which were “Jolly” and “Miraibana,” the latter being the track that caught my attention. So like anyone would do, I followed them on Twitter. A few demos of new tracks were uploaded to Youtube and it seemed it wouldn’t be long till DISDOL were in the studio. Continue reading

Is This Where We Are Now?

Bear with me, you guys.

I’ve seen different iterations of this tweet now several times in the last few days:

Because DISDOL has something like 45 members, and they all RT one version or another

You might not find it as interesting as I do, but look at which account it’s coming from, and look at the URL linked in it. Continue reading

Phillter’s Christmas in Tokyo: Part IV

How are you liking Phillter’s idol experience, amigos? It makes me jealous — I know that I’ll never personally get to take a trip like this. And I know what the punchline — publishing tomorrow! — is going to be, and that makes me jealouser. Anyway, Part I and Part II and Part III are here if you need them.

December 27 brought with it what I thought was going to be a day of recuperation and relaxation. I had plans to go to the Odaiba Onsen Park in Tokyo with the friends who came to Tokyo with me (they are more into anime and partying, and so didn’t come to any of the shows I went to which is totally fine, everyone has their own interests). But after a day of shopping I took a second to look at the park’s tattoo policy, because I have tattoos. Continue reading
