Yanakoto Sotto Mute Launch “Afterglow” MV and Digital Single

At midnight Japan time, Yanakoto Sotto Mute released the MV for their major label debut single, “Afterglow”.

Bask in it.

It’s beautiful.

The costumes. The strings. Nade-chan eating a rose; Mani eating marbles; Ichika hitting the high notes; Tsukasa with a bucket on her head. It’s all gorgeously absurd and near perfection. Continue reading

Yanakoto Sotto Mute Get Retrospective While Unveiling the Future in “Layline” MV

In a last ditch effort to demonstrate that we deserve good things in 2019, Yanakoto Sotto Mute are ending the year with an MV for Layline, #3 in their “NINE” series of singles.

Scholars of Yanamute will notice the settings of past MVs Lily, Any, Holy Grail, Awake and Morning pelting by accompanied by flashes of the imagery from “Bubble” and “Mirrors”. This 4:44 MV pays homage to virtually all of the motifs of the past while incrementally constructing a vision of Yanamute’s future. The end finds the trio back on the set of Horoscope, Yanakoto Sotto Mute’s very first MV, as they are joined by their newest member and finally head to the stage as a quartet once again.  For fans, this MV is a seismic landmark and it helps that Layline is one of the best of the “NINE” tracks YSM has been quietly releasing over the past few months.

The MV though is in danger of being upstaged by the group’s big reveal. You recall a couple weeks ago when Yanamute dropped a teaser trailer on us without even enough info to know how to spell their new member’s name? Now we finally got the deets:

Meet Rin Tsukasa. She would like you to call her, “Tsukasa”.

Yanakoto Sotto Mute Unveil a New Member

Yanakoto Sotto Mute released a minute long MV on Sunday to tease a new song and, more significantly, their new fourth member.

YSM do everything in style and their newest member fits the mold, stalking the streets in black until she shifts to signature Yanamute white as her hand grasps that fourth mic.

So, meet 「凛つかさ」:

Yanakoto Sotto Mute Release Stain MV and I Will Never Be Clean Enough To Deserve This

This Is the Live Glory of Yanakoto Sotto Mute

“We’re releasing a new live video at 7:00” said the tweet, and my heart jumped a little bit because while the Greatest Idol Group That People Are Just Now Starting to Realize Exist Despite My Never Shutting Up About Them For More Than Two Years, Yanakoto Sotto Mute, have lots and lots of live video online, most of it is fancam; an official cut, maybe with high-quality audio, would be the kind of treat worth carving out time for.

As we know, the group is in the middle of a three-month EP-per release schedule that’s sort of the rage among idols these days, and they’re currently on a free tour, TO THE GATE. This is taken from a stage in Osaka. Old fans, prepare yourselves accordingly; new people, prepare for the possibility of your soul leaving your body: Continue reading

Yanakoto Sotto Mute Out of Nowhere!!

It has been a roller coaster of a morning in the alt-idol  breaking news department, but nothing is so welcome after the official departure of the original alt-Oshi than an international guerrilla release by Yanakoto Sotto Mute.

(Update: I have been informed that today’s release was first announced on YSM’s Twitter earlier this week and that I am not a true fan of the group.)

It’s already available on iTunes so why are you still here?

Once again proving their designation as the Perfect Modern Idols , Yanamute’s unexpected album drop comes with the promise of an EP per month in the run up to Christmas.  “Stain”, the first track on this morning’s surprise offering, is a stunner, so  these are not b-side offerings but chill-inducing, A-Grade material.

So if this morning’s big news had you crying into your coffee, thanks to Yanamute we can now face the weekend with smiles on our faces. Happy freaking Friday!!

We Interview Idols: Yanakoto Sotto Mute

This past weekend, our man Daemon hit up the East Meets West Music Fest; with Monsterpanda in tow as translator, he sat down with literally three of this site’s all-time favorite idols. Today, we have his report back from entering the holiest of holies with Yanakoto Sotto Mute, the perfect modern idols.

Talking to the people waiting for the doors to Anaheim’s Chain Reaction to open for East Meets West Fest, it became apparent that the one group over from Japan that people were least familiar with was Yanakoto Sotto Mute. Even though their debut, “Bubble”, was on several websites’ Album of the Year lists for 2017, and their follow-up Mirrors is a contender for the current year, Yanamute still seems fly under the radar for some Western fans of chika idol. One person in line behind me said he had intentionally avoided listening to them. “I don’t want to know anything about them,” he said, “I want to experience them raw for the first time.”

While a part of me envied him that imminent experience, I was also a little concerned. Yanakoto Sotto Mute can be a lot to take in all at once. Their music is complex: Rife with signature, tempo and key changes while their vocals play with harmony and dissonance. Their dancing is like a more contemplative version of Mikiko-sensei’s gesture-based choreography and can seem more focused on expressing internal dialogue than generating audience participation. But for all of the brooding introspection, Yanamute’s performances also contain frequent, audience-churning moments of fierce and inspired joy.

A few hours prior, we had been given the opportunity to speak to Yanamute’s Nadeshiko, Mani, Ichika and Rena about their impending debut American performance. As we were led in to meet them, the quartet were dressed in their signature white costumes, each cut to a distinct and individual pattern. Much like their music, they came across as both bright and introspective; contemplative and friendly. And just a little nervous. Continue reading

Let Me Help You or a Friend Go See Necroma, Yanamyu and Hanako-san in the Godly Flesh

The East Meets West Music Fest! You know what it is — NECRONOMIDOL, Yanakoto Sotto Mute and Hanako-san, in Anaheim in a month’s time, joined by a mess of metal bands and not-from-Japan idols for a two-day celebration of the collision of western and Japanese music, culture, etc. Yep, it’s peak Homicidols Dot Com:

  • Mission statement
  • Idol besties
  • Favorite idol thing ever
  • Unofficial site mascot

And I’m not even going! Circumstances collided in a perfect storm of things that preclude ol’ Maniac’s participation, which sucks mightily, but guess what.

Seriously, guess. Continue reading
