We Interview Idols: POLARIS★

Last time, we welcomed the lovely rookie group END OF IDOL and heard them share about their idol activities as well as the image they’re aiming for. On this episode of “Vietnamese Idol Society” (a random name I just came up with), please let Homicidols introduce you to a veteran group in the scene, POLARIS★ (@Polaris_idolVN), who has a completely different charm.

We can actually say that POLARIS★ is an old friend of Homicidols as they have already appeared on the site in this quite detailed article back in 2020 . The only thing I can add is, as a Vietnamese myself, I just love how they portray our country in their work.

Let’s Discover Some Vietnamese Idols

The influence of Japanese-style alternative idol has, undeniably, been spreading further and further across the globe. Over the past couple of yeas, Homicidols has covered overseas idol units from Italy, South Korea, Thailand, Australia and, most recently, the Philippines, all of whom directly channel the style and spirit  (and, sometimes, language) of our favorite underground and indie idols in Japan.  This activity has become so widespread that Team Homicidols has encountered trouble covering it all.  It is why we recently brought FarFromSleep on board specifically to focus on activity in South Korea. It is also why, when Halien reached out to us and offered to put together an overview of the idol scene in Vietnam, our response was an enthusiastic, “Yes, please!”

Vietnam’s Idol Sensation POLARIS is Truly Truly Contagious!

International idols seem to be making some waves lately! Over in France they’ve got WACK tribute artists ORiYON, and from Italy, (via China I believe) there’s ERISU who’ve gotten some well-deserved buzz going on. It’s enough to get one wondering what else is going on in new idol territory out side of Japan. From the little bits and pieces I’ve picked up online, I do know that there are now pockets of active idols throughout Asia, the Southeast in particular, but these groups are mostly still too niche to really break out just yet. But here’s one group you may want to watch out for, it’s Vietnam’s idol sensation, POLARIS★!

They’ve actually been around since 2016, but the group is entirely new to me. As a matter of fact, the MV I came across that brought them to my attention came out in early May,  so while we’re a bit late for the party, at least we showed up before it was over! And appropriately enough, it’s a Covid 19 themed song. It makes sense though… if a stupid virus is going to come along and wreck everything, then at least try to have a little cheeky fun in some way with it. So let’s check out this catchy gem of a tune, “Corona Ahahahahaha”!!!!!!
