Following a surprise one-man live where they announced a surprise new member, PIGGS dropped a surprise MV for their new song, “NAKED BORN NAKED DIE”.
We have hit the half-way point of our attempt to capture some of the greatness that the alternative, indie and underground idols of Japan have contributed to the world over the past ten years. If you would like a recap of the methodology we used to arrive at the album rankings, please visit week one’s installment. If you missed last week’s post or want a refresher of the albums that placed 31st – 40th, you can find that here.
Now, on with the next ten albums in the countdown plus one honorable mention that fell just a little bit short of the top 50:
I’ve just always wanted to title a post this, thanks Lui
The new PIGGS single hits stores in a few days, and mid-last week they released the second MV from it (first), and it’s still not the title track, so that leaves a great deal of hope in there being yet another video coming our way. But for the whole reason that I got a NIN vibe before even listening to the thing, here’s “Piggy”:
Somehow or another, the permanent breakup between BiS and Pour Lui has turned out to be the best thing that could happen to both things — the OG punk idols’ resurrection seemed as likely to be a branding exercise as anything else when they were re-constituted without the founder or any past members at all, yet have been remarkably stable and arguably as good as ever; the OG punk idol herself, the grand dame of this scene, went off and formed a unit that has her fingerprints all over it and, sans some of the pretenses of Lui’s past work, just keeps knocking ’em out of the park.
So yeah, here we are, a second single in as many fiscal year quarters on the horizon, and PIGGS is doing it so good and making it look so easy:
Our girl Saki on the choreo too, if it wasn’t obvious Continue reading
Yeah, first, I know. But it’s true! PIGGS has only released excellent longer-play material so far; “T.A.K.O.” drops a week from today as the official first single of Pour Lui’s emeritus project.
I’ll tell you: I had no idea what to say about it! You can only complete so many permutations of “it good” before you run out of ways to put some kind of spin on a piece, and “it good” is just padding in a very similar way to how I’m padding out this sentence to increase the post length and give you all some extra bang for your buck. So let’s get it out of the way and talk about something that did strike me, maybe meaningfully, while watching this sucker.
We’re not telling porkies here, the new PIGGS EP is probably the best you’ll hear before the year ends!
Really felt necessary to get this one out of the way as a standalone thing — we here at Homicidols Dot Com aren’t all huge PIGGS people, but I feel like we all support PIGGS in principle on the grounds of their being oriented toward audiences outside of Japan and all. Plus Cal’s like secretly best friends with everybody in the bigger, broader WACK family and usually has fun anecdotes that we can’t ethically publish, and that includes at least one meaningful conversation with PIGGS’s Ryan B. I personally missed the actual debut of this, Pour Lui’s latest attempt to make good on her own personal vision, but I’ve been fortunate enough for them to release stuff during my time back to paying attention, including this MV and the implications thereof but more importantly the upcoming release of a new EP, 5 Kill Stars, from which they released some additional music the other day: Continue reading
We have a resident PIGGSpert here at Homicidols Dot Com. That is Cal. Cal did not seem to be nearly as interested in this as I was, and I’m in a mood, so I’m writing about PIGGS now from the standpoint of a person who was almost completely out of the idol loop for most of the first half of the year, which is when PIGGS became a thing straight from the fertile mind of one Pour L. Lui. It is the privilege of ownership!
So yeah, PIGGS both announced a new thing and showed off a new thing yesterday, and I reiterate that it absolutely rocks, and I will also add that I’ve now played it through somewhere in the vicinity of 15 times, only a handful of them concurrent. It’s worth your time!
Gawd. Continue reading
You’re one of the most legendary idol performers to grace the stage and everything is going perfectly and then your group disbands. So next, you’re one of the most legendary idol performers to grace the stage and everything is going perfectly and then your band disbands. So after that, you’re one of the most legendary idol performers to grace the stage and everything is going perfectly then you lose a diet challenge and leave your group. AND THEN you’re one of the most legendary idol performers to grace the stage and everything is going perfectly but then your group disbands. So finally, you say fuck it and decided to make your own damn group.
Everyone say “HALLO PIGGS”!
This article was a bit delayed due to sickness, so sorry to all 99% of you who know about this by now!
Anyway, we got the solo album, time to see the group! Meet PIGGS:
(We knew Pour Lui was borrowing WACK resources for this, did that include the artist for the GANG PARADE split groups’ logos?)
