The Homicidols April Fools Day Round-Up 2024

Idol April Fools Day (aka Fox Day) is one of the biggest holidays on the idol calendar, up there with Idol Halloween and Idol X-Mas.  The amount of time, energy, and commitment that idols devote to their April Fools day pranks each year is always impressive. However, it can be difficult at times to tell an April Fools Day stunt from normal, everyday, Japanese idol insanity. For example, it may seem that, at first glance, this is a well executed comedic sketch by yosugala, except that salted fish roe sac, cherry blossom, and shrimp pizza is an actual real thing that people will apparently pay money for. Luckily, Homicidols is here to guide the unwary or overwhelmed idol fan through the events of April first and help sort fact from jesterly fiction.

Here are some of the best April Fools Day pranks that our favorite idols pulled off this year:

Look What Oshi Got Us for Christmas!!

Since we are all well past the days when Santa pays a visit, and some of us have even reached the stage where receiving a nice pair of wool socks is considered a decent Yuletide haul, it is understandable for expectations regarding Christmas gifts to be markedly low.

Luckily, our idol oshi never forget about us and have delivered in a big way this Christmas. Let’s see all of the presents they left under the tree!!

The Homicidols Interview with Isiliel: Part 2

We had the opportunity to sit down with Himari Tsukishiro for an in-depth interview a couple of months ago about her current solo project, Isiliel. We had such a good, long talk that there was too much material for a single video. We published Part One of our conversation back in August, and are now ready to bring your Part Two.

In our continuing conversation, Himari talks about her process and inspiration for composing Isiliel’s lyrics, her work as a stage actress in The Makai, and her experience working with legendary producer Fredrik Nordström. She also answers more questions from her fans here on Homicidols who wanted to know about everything, from her greatest inspirations to her favorite brand of lipstick.

Check it out!

We Interview Idols: Isiliel – Himari Tsukishiro

Back on July 4th, we had the opportunity to sit down with Himari Tsukishiro shortly after she had finished the last of her eight performances at Anime Expo 2023.  The stop at AX marked about the halfway point of Himari’s debut world tour as Isiliel, her solo idol project. Still outfitted in cosplay as Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy, Himari spoke to us very candidly about the challenges of the world tour, the origins of her solo project, and her thoughts on the future of NECRONOMIDOL, the legendary idol unit of which she is currently the sole remaining member.

Homicidols Best of the Year (so far)

We are one third of the way through the Homicidols calendar year (which runs December through November for REASONS) so we thought it was time to make note of the songs, albums and MVs that we’ve had on repeat for the last four months.  When I say “We,” I mean Team Homicidols and the denizens of the Homicidols’ Discord server. 2022: The Year of the Solo Idol Project

We are nearing the time when we start wrapping up 2022 which, as I’ve mentioned a few times in the Weekender over the past few months, could be dubbed The Year of the Solo Project. While we saw an enormous increase in the number of new idol projects in general versus the last couple of years, the sheer number of idols striking out on their own was something new and particularly noticeable.

The origins of chika idol are not well documented, at least in readily available, English language sources, but the apocryphal tales out of the late 90s are of solo, self-produced idols trying to attract audiences to small, basement stages of clubs in Akihabara. Perhaps it was the self reflection driven by the isolation of COVID that kindled a desire in so many idols to stand on stage alone and turn the genre back to it’s fabled roots. Whatever the reason behind the phenomenon, the end results have been pretty stellar.

The Unstoppable Force That Is Himari Tsukishiro And Isiliel

In her eight years of activity, Himari Tsukishiro has proven herself one of the most determined chika idols in the business; having recently claimed the title of longest-reigning NECRONOMIDOL member, overseeing more member switches than your average football coach, her admitted refusal to take a day off, and in just the last few years, branching into stage acting and a solo career, the latter of which recently commemorated its first anniversary. There are many reasons why Himari has become one of the most recognizable and prominent figures in the alt-idol fandom, and her sheer willpower and dedication in a notoriously-volatile industry is one of the most overlooked.

And yet, I know I wasn’t the only one who worried about her future upon the announcement of NECRONOMIDOL’s hiatus two months ago. While she reassured us that she wouldn’t be gone for too long, the fandom rippled with uneasy deliberations of “But what if this is it?” Lucky for us, though, Himari kept to her word, with the announcement of a US tour beginning later this month. But that wouldn’t be the last we’d hear from her.
