Hey there, Cal here. I’m Homicidols’ pin-up mascot, treasurer and I also lie for fun sometimes. I don’t normally write in first person so forgive me if I seem like a fish out of water. If you read the first entry in our personal top 10’s series, you’ll see Dae mention that I had this idea thinking it’ll be fun and it ended up being a little gruelling. He was 100% correct, I like too many songs to pick just 10! It’s like drawing blood from a stone, a really sexy stone with immaculate music taste.
When it comes to things like this, I prefer to separate things into different categories such as “music that has a personal meaning for me” or “music to touch the stove to” or “music that makes me want to run screaming into traffic.” I listen to a lot of idol songs, like a lotttttt, so in the end, I just ended up picking the best of the best from various criterias. So this list kind of ended up being a mix of the sentimental to the slappers. Please enjoy it.
It’s no secret that we love Fingers Cross here, their music has been a favourite discovery from 2021. Always unafraid to say what they feel about politics or social issues, the group have a new unit formed around the theme of “the voice of the silent youth,” so get ready to listen to that voice in the form of SHIMMER SHRIMPMER!
Fingers Cross, the shoegazing idols from Thailand, are big faves with the Homicidols team. Really, we adore them! Cal wrote a great intro to the group, and later explored their willingness to tackle social issues with a boldness not usually associated with this genre of music. Aside from for their spectacular musical ventures, the very heart and spirit of these ladies makes for one of the more intriguing and exciting groups happening right now, and adding further proof that great idol music doesn’t end at the Japanese coastal waters.
And we’re not alone in noticing! Gerpfast Records out of Indonesia added them to their catalog of forward-thinking experimental artists. (They previously released tapes by RAY!*) Gerpfast is a label that reaches across a wide spectrum of audio treasures to release limited-edition, artfully-crafted cassette tapes, and this group suits the label’s vision perfectly. The six-song cassette is titled “Early Birth”...
Any idol fan knows that Tokyo Idol Festival is the biggest, hottest idol event of the year and not just because of Japan’s sweltering summer temperatures. TIF has always been a place for groups to shine for all of their fans, new and old. But this year, what if we took the Tokyo out of TIF? Say hello to the TIF ASIA TOUR KICK OFF!
Some of the coolest idols from Thailand have a new live video and boy do they have something to say. With instrumentation from Thai band While We Were, sink your teeth into the live footage of “Su Tae Tong Mai Tai” (สู้แต่ต้องไม่ตาย, “Fight But Don’t Die”).
