End of an Era of TERROR: Most of KAQRIYO Out

I know we have been more of a blog (our true self, really!) and less of a news site in 2022. It was a weird year and timeliness regarding idol news just couldn’t be  a priority, unfortunately.

However, it is with a heavy heart that I figure I should use the event mentioned in the title as sort of wrap-up of the notable things that have happened in the last few months with Codomomental. Grab your tissues and let’s get to it.

“The new akugi MV is emotional whiplash” — @DaeMetal

We’re a little late in delivering here due to wires getting crossed, but, even almost a full week after its release, the latest akugi MV can really only be summed up by the above-referenced statement by our very own Daemon. And uh:

Tastes Great, Mortally Oppressive, Less Filling: New akugi MV

The first EP from Codomomental newbies akugi, Playplay, seems to be hitting the stores in Japan as we speak, and that means that it’s time to show us why we should buy the thing, and that means an MV, and frankly it’s been too dang long since we saw akugi do their thing, so let’s just right in:

Zenkimi guest spot!

It’s an akugi Preview, Let’s Do It Right

Thought they could sneak one past me, did they? So akugi, either the latest or second-latest debutante from Codomomental (I can’t remember) and therefore loved by default around here, are officially releasing an EP next Wednesday, and to thoroughly whet our appetites the bosses have released another track, yes on a limited basis, but a limited basis that I managed to snag at the right time!

Anyway, this one guests Uine from fellow newbies TOKYO Tefutefu, and is definitely different from the norm. Set your ears to enjoy!

You know what to do. Continue reading

Nobody Knew It at the Time, But I Was Just Having a Conversation about akugi’s Latest

So just the other day, back when this was happening, I thought to myself, huh, it’s actually been a minute since we last heard from akugi at all, there must be something imminent happening there. And resultingly, because it was on my mind, bringing up akugi while talking with a friend who asked the obligatory just-heard-that-Maniac-does-a-Japanese-music-blog questions of what’s good and what should they check out and what do I personally like now and so it’s basically K-pop no you fool it’s nothing like K-pop there’s less distance between K-pop and modern American R&B than there is between either of those things and just J-pop, let alone the stuff that I write about oh hell what was I talking about? Right, see there’s this one company …

On Monday of this very week, then, with no real connection to the former, my brother messages me to start a conversation about trap metal. This revealed both our mutual passive interest in the form, our general disdain for artists X and Y, and my typing with vigor “lol there really needs to be some idol group that does trapcore or something”.

Forward to today! Thank you, Codomomental, for this morning giving us a refresher on what is for my money your most interesting new project since KAQRIYOTERROR, still with Architect in their name, found their groove several years in the past now. And thank you for this instance of breaking the Codomocore mold (songwriting credits!) inadvertently leading us directly into the path of a speeding freight train that I now fear is going to somehow be normalized into idol genre mores and suddenly it’s going to be face tattoos and misappropriated street fashion and snare rolls everywhere.

Anyway, the window closed hours ago, but you know the drill:

We Got That New akugi Track and Stuff, for It Is Neat

So you may have seen and/or heard that recent Codomomental debutante akugi dropped a preview track yesterday, which wasn’t foreshadowed so much as all but outwardly promised after some heavy-handed tweets and enough of a timeline (if you pay attention to such things) since the last drop that it only made sense.

And of course we missed the boat! It happens, man. Life gets busy. But communities and Teams are nice and helpful things, and of course we didn’t miss the boat completely, we just had to chase after it in a little fishing dinghy with a vintage outboard that we commandeered at knifepoint from some poor sap who just wanted to toss his line in the water, maybe get a nice catfish for dinner. Poor guy. But not poor us, for we have the song, and you’d better believe that we’re going to share it after the jump in imitation of the usual format for these posts, and boy oh boy if syva hates that fans share his songs after the preview windows close under normal circumstances, I can only imagine how he’ll feel about this. It’s Not Too Late to Talk about How Awesome akugi’s Second Digital Single Is, Is It?

Well oops. Not-quite-the-latest Codomomental project, akugi, who is currently in the lead for Group Most Likely To Fill The Komachi-Shaped Hole In Your Heart, officially dropped their second single and MV and … well, this is really different from the last one! In fact, my above description is way more apt than I would’ve expected. Team, predictably, adores the track and had a brief chat about the video, and then we all had other things to do and holy hell it’s Saturday, let’s real quick do something with akugi before the boss thinks we don’t like their things anymore.

It’s actually a really easy thing to do. Frankly, I’ve had the refrain in my head for days and have been completely happy about it. So, on the off chance that you’re in this community and you like sequester yourself from Codomomental for some reason and aren’t hip to akugi, let’s take this brief step back into, uh, mid-week to enjoy it all again:

I’m Serious, Kick out 2020 with Akugi’s First MV

Akugi, one of Codomomental’s new mysterious projects, has decided to soften out parting with 2020 by providing us with an amazing first MV for their first track r u serious?

Now, I use soften out here in the loosest of ways; our dear Dae has described the video as “Visual ASMR gone wrong” and “revulsing”. I prefer the term cathartic  and nightmarish, for my part. The song will wrap you in a trance-like state for just under 3 minutes, and the psychedelic visuals of crushing, squishing, stabbing and an horrifying figure straight out of the likes of The Magnus Archives.

There’s Another New akugi Song, You Guys

There’s been a lot of Codomomental to work with these past few days, gang, what with Tsurezure previewing their final song the other day and akugi letting us all know that we’re in for a world of trouble when their first MV drops probably any minute now. But the cherry on top (or maybe the whipped cream, I’m bad at this analogy) is that akugi is also gracing us with another new track, a complete change of pace from this one that under ordinary circumstances you’d only have two hours from the origin to view so if it’s still not yet your time zone’s equivalent of 9:00 AM ET then friend you should click in the tweet but otherwise you do realize which website you’re on right now right?

And click through for the usual. Continue reading
