Make Your Pre-final ‘Best Of’ Lists

Team, we have done an absolute ton of work in terms of getting in nominations for the Best of 2016; the trick now, as opposed to the last time that we tried this out, is that the exercise is to get down to actual finalist lists.

Nominations are temporarily closed; we know that good stuff is still coming, but we can worry about that part later, specifically in a late-entry submission before voting opens.

I’ve combined all of the feedback so far to put together total nominations lists. Using what’s on these lists, write into the comments you personal top five (or seven, as noted) for each category.

Next Steps

First, I need your opinions on this:

I think it’s doing Tentenko a disservice to list her as an idol here: it’s something she stopped doing as soon as BiS ended and by her own admission, was just a way for her to draw attention to her band and then later to become a stepping stone for her career as a musician.

Second, you can start here in the comments if you want (after you submit your lists), but I’m also going to circulate (by some means — haven’t decided how yet) solicitation for you to write a defense of your personal nominees or really anything else that you particularly agree with. This is only positive: Don’t try to elevate your favorites by ragging on somebody else’s.

Third, to keep things interesting and motivated, I’ll be running a few promotions during the voting period. So for purposes of full disclosure, said promotions involve me reaching out to various idol managers to see if they’d like to contribute any goods to give away (feel free to keep me honorable on that front). They’ll be little contests:

  • Submitted ballot/s closest to the final winners.
  • Match Maniac: Because this is You against Me, there’ll be a separate poll to see who’s closest to my personal Highfalutin Website Guy list of the best.
  • And one lucky duck who submits a full ballot will get something; if I get enough stuff, I’ll give out more!

Prizes are all dependent on whether managers/labels actually send anything, but we can still do something even if there isn’t anything to win.

I’m mainly responsible for all the Tentenko nominations but it has since struck me that if you don’t allow bands here then perhaps she shouldn’t be allowed; she does after all make her own music just like, you know, a band. There were collaborators, sure, on the more mainstream stuff she’s now doing but I assume that’s still her on synths. I really hope someone puts up a better counter-argument though.

  5. It’s an honor to be featured in a pinned post♪~

    This is my annotated list with justifications. If I added anything, I prefaced them with * to make it easier to identify. Also, sorry for the inconsistent formating, it looks a bit unpolished.
    Surprise of the Year
    -BiSurrection : I did not expect Pour Lui to be interested to start BiS again, especially considering the existence of BiSH. I also feel they were able to put on an incredible show of the resurrection.
    -Tentenko’s proper release : I discovered her solo work through “Good Girl, Bad Girl” and I was immediately charmed. When I discovered she kickstarted her album (and that I was too late to chip in, let alone check if she would ship oversea), I was pretty sad. She seemed pretty keen on doing her things in a DIY fashion, so I really did not expect her to be signed by a label. Also, bonus points for keeping her aesthetic/style through it all.
    *Wasuta’s “The Perfect Idol”: If we go by “Least expected” and not by “Most pleasing news”, I think The World’s Standard should definitely win this category. NOTHING would have suggested the pastel and cutesy Wasuta would take such a direction. Even (and maybe especially if) they go back to their habitual cat persona, I feel like this attempt deserves recognition and might be representative of the shift from “typical” saccharine idols to something more bitter/aggressive.

    Letdown of the year:
    -SiS debuting and then disbanding : It’s a shame both for the girls involved and the fans. It just feel… bad. Even if some girls were added to Gang Parade (and it could have been done by other means), I don’t get anything positive from this. (But then again, I have a very conflictual relation toward Watanabe’s work ethics)
    -Youtube Red :Haven’t experienced it much in Canada yet, but it’s a huge threat, especially since this website and its fan have a focus on emergent artists.

    Saddest Graduation:
    -Yurumerumo
    -Hug Me’s graduation: Her lack of filter was extremely different from what we usually get from the idol world. Plus, as it seems she just slipped away from the public eye, I am a bit worried for her.

    Collaboration of the Year (or I AM A SUCKER FOR CROSSOVERS)
    -Oyasumi Hologram x Maison Book Girl (These two groups are in my top 10, maybe possibly my top 5. A collaboration is a wonderful gif, especially with the ethereal feeling both groups give off.
    -Ano x Oomori Seiko
    -Jun Togawa x Hijokaidan
    -Hirano Nozomi’s collab with several other ex-BiS members: I always felt like Nozomis quiet presence was hard to properly acknowledged. I was delighted by this song and the presence of other ex-BiS members was the cherry on top.
    -Zenkimi x Yukueshirezutsurezure : They are doing sister groups right.

    Performance of the Year:
    -Maison Book Girl at Next Music From Tokyo: I saw the one in Montreal, not Vancouver, but it was EXCELLENT, plus I really want to encourage small tours by small bands. MBG also climbed to my top 3 of favorite musical acts with their live and might even take a higher position as °C-ute graduates from Hello!Project
    -BiSH “Orchestra” Live: It’s just a high quality live and BiSH’s stage presence is state of the art.

    Yukueshirezutsurezure: I got into Zenkimi because of their aesthetic, and I was really happy they were getting a sister group. Well, I ended up liking Yukue even more, as they are more my type musically. I think it’s an incredibly strong group headed for great things.

    -Aina The End: Her stage presence is insane, she always gives her all when she sings/screams.
    -Shiina Pikarin (she is very entrancing)
    -A~ Komachi
    -Kanamiru

    Most Poised to Break Through
    -Maison Book Girl: They have just been signed major, they did a small Canadian tour and I hope for nothing less than more recognition. Their sound is consistent and unique with the refreshing vibe of a rainy summer day; I believe we will need it with the potential bleakness of 2017.
    -Yukueshirezutsurezure: At the cathartic end of the Idol spectrum, Yukue (YukuShiZu? Do they have an official nickname?) is rising fast and aggressively. With that energy and the way paved by Zenkimi, I have no doubt they’ll get the recognition they deserve.

    Single of the Year
    -Hirano Nozomi: A great song by an often overlooked member.
    -Tentenko’s Houkago Sympathy: This might be the worst justification, but I feel like everything she releases is pretty good and her releases are quite separated from one another, so it’s one of my favorite because I long for her sound.
    -BiS BiSBiS: No non-H!P song ever made it as my phone ringtone until BiSBiS. I am completely head over heels for the lyrics of this song as well, everything is just perfect.
    -Billie Idle “Nakisou Sunday”

    Video of the Year
    -Yurumerumo -Hamidashi Paradise: Great effort by their production theme, I am especially appreciative that they took the time to translate it all.
    -BiSH’s Hontou Honki: It’s super polished, colorful, beautiful, without compromising anything that BiSH stands for.
    -Necronomidol’s “SKULLS IN THE STARS”: While I do not follow Necronomidol, I always go back to this video because it’s that great to watch.
    -Yukueshirezutsurezure’s Shinjuku Cinema Connection: No video this year felt like a punch to the guts quite as this one. I think it could be a good representative to explain the “Homicidol” term.
    *Up Up Girls — “Barebare I LOVE YOU (Apuga Seifuku Seishun Collection ver.)”: Although I love Tentenko and artsy videos, this PV is just too amazing to pass. It’s wacky, it’s entertaining, I just feel like watching this all day.

    Song of the Year
    -Maison Book Girl’s Lost AGE : It’s representative of the sound of the group and I love the combo of softness and resolve it packs.
    -BiSH’s Hontou Honki: It’s my favorite BiSH song, I believe, and I really love BiSH. It find a way to be just the right mix of energic and aggressive.

    -Hanako-san (I am especially rooting for Hanako-san as I feel this is the category most appropriate for her. I feel her particular act is one of the best and deserves acknowledgement).

    Regarding the Tentenko matter, I feel like the commenter makes a fair point. However, that would also mean Tentenko falls into a weird void where it’s hard to get informations and updates about her new work. Therefore, as a BiS graduate, as this web side is about the “Hard side of idol” and I feel she is still somewhere on the end of the spectrum, I personally would keep her. If we follow that logic, we might also have to disqualify Billie Idle from winning anything, as their moto is “Not kawaii, not idol” if I remember correctly.
