ATARASHII GAKKO! dropped an MV for the new song “Freaks”, featuring Indonesian rapper Warren Hue and whole heya of sumo wrestlers.
Once again utilizing the square, Instagram-friendly aspect ratio, the members display mini-super powers as they battle sumo wrestlers in a battle to see who’s most goofy. Warren Hue’s contribution slides in effortlessly and complimentary, both visually and vocally.
We’ve been talking a lot lately about the current infusion of hip hop into almost all aspects of alt-idol, and ATARASHII GAKKO! is a prominent case in point. “Freaks” takes a the group further into that territory than ever before with a hip-hop mash-up of piano jazz, Fat Boy Slim-style gospel samples and K-Pop-flavored, vocoded vocals. The member’s vocals are almost entirely delivered via rap although we do get a sublime pre-chorus belted out by SUZUKA. It’s a short song, weighing in at just 2:14, so just as they convinced Victor to release the full-length versions of their previous MVs, this offering almost comes across as one of their old short ver. videos. It makes me wonder if there is a more extensive mix coming out at some point in the future.
If the official MV doesn’t highlight the group’s signature choreography well enough for you, there is a dance version available as well.
As an aside: can you imagine looking out the window and seeing this?
Back on track: Since the last time we checked in with ATARASHII GAKKO!, they released another episode in their Seishun Academy series. In it, they tackle the most important issue of our day: what to have for lunch.
