So remember back in 2017 Year in Review in Review*, when I said that I was making it a new year’s resolution to do more for idol debuts in 2018? And then I did and 2018 was like the best debut year since … 2014? 2012? It was amazing. So much good stuff, though not all of it panned out. Well, I’m making something of the same commitment for this year; I have a tough time keeping up with news these days, but maybe I can keep up with cool debuts as they happen? Sure.
Which brings us to Night Owl (Twitter)! Who … did not debut anytime near now, but in fact back in August, during the period that we shall always refer to in hushed tones as “Maniac’s Interregnum.” And then I had them on my official radar since, golly, at least November if my tab history is to be believed. Good morning! You ever just have one of those days? Technically mine just started because it’s oh-dark-hilarious here at the moment, but I’m putting myself flush in the middle because it actually started yesterday afternoon. Ain’t really feeling it! But hey, it wasn’t the most exciting week in idol, either, so I don’t feel like I’m selling anything short here so much as, like, just kind of matching the mood. Go play the Fun, though; it’s scandalous!

This week’s fun has definitely been done before, but, frankly I don’t care, for two reasons:
- The last time we did this, it was way too much fun.
- By the time you’re reading this, I’ll be in an undisclosed location without any internet, probably without any furniture, and very likely crying while surrounded by boxes. Aka I’m moving.
Idol scandals are a weird thing. They can go from anything from “this idol just got arrested” to “this idol has a similar kind of love life as any other woman aged 18 to 25” to “this idol did literally nothing wrong, but the company she works for just committed a human rights violation.” They come out of nowhere, send the whole fandom aflutter with a mixture of rage and/or sympathy, and, as much as most of us would hate to admit it, are kind of fun to watch from afar. Kamen Joshi, Alice Project, PARMS, whatever have you — not the best reputation in the business. While I do indeed (because it is my website and HTML is unlimited) have the space to expound on every negative thing ever alleged about the entity, I will not, for I am lazy and will instead encourage you to do your own research into such matters. That being said, the perception in no way plays out in the idol production, which is always so earnestly idol that it makes your teeth ache. And when the world faces unprecedented crises, who or what could possibly be better to show us a way forward?
Yes! Can this promotional video for the sustainable sourcing of electrical power, especially wind, help to turn the tide against unrelenting climate change? Or is it simply a sinister greenwashing ploy to cover for the unsavory side of the business? You decide!*
This is the best thing today.
Why did C-Style release this MV? Because they could, apparently. Why is the video the way it is? Because that’s how C-Style likes it, and when you have more a Twizzler holding your skeleton together rather than a normal human spine, the world caters to you. It’s why you can have a song that makes no sense be completely awesome while you dance around dressed as a bee, but like how a high schooler who needs to do something for Halloween would do it.
C-Style is great and everybody who doesn’t think that can eat farts.

Aside from being one of the all-time great free agent pickups in idol blogging history, I’ve always been able to rely on one Chris Winsall, Mr. Toxic Breakfast himself, for adroit plucking of otherwise obscure excellence from the idol heap and shaking it in my face until I embrace it with all the enthusiasm required. And now that he’s on Team, it even happens quietly! The note the other day was one of the weirdest shots out of the dark that I’ve had in a while, and I’m completely here for it.

The other night, as you know unless you do in fact currently live under a rock or perhaps spend your energies elsewhere, LADYBABY had their final live. Folks have been responding to it and reacting to it and writing about it and doing that whole thing, as is appropriate, but I felt like the whole thing really was best summed up in a few official photos:

Well kick me in the neck and call me a bozo! I’d like to thank Cal for bringing this up in the Team chat and then starting a short conversation on vocaloid, which enabled me to surreptitiously make off with the song and be the one to tell you all about it, in so far as there’s really anything to say about it! But! Zsasz, who did not win Best Debut (Groups) in the Homicidols Best of 2019 but did get an okay number of votes, have a new track, so let’s listen to it.
Neat! And okay, it turns out that it’s “just” a cover of a previously existing Utsu-P number, but that’s fine, it was new to me and I’m sure many of you as recently as the moment that you read that phrase, so it’s all good. And it is good! And in scrolling through Zsasz’s feed I’m glad to see that they’re playing so many gigs but kind of wish they had more photos or something! Oh well!
Well, okay, maybe it’s not quite as over-the-top as all that, but I was brought into all of the update-y stuff for this post by a Soundcloud notification, and the first thing I saw from it was the song title and my mind did all of the requisite stuff from there, actual facts on the ground that were to be subsequently discovered be damned.
