Oshi Digest #40: Albums

Oshi and I communed again. She wished for me to relay the following to those of you in Europe who will be seeing Necroma in but a few brief days:

I am shaken to my core. Continue reading

Maison Book Girl Loses No Steam for the Rainy Season

It’s summer. The days and the nights grow more humid every day, but it’s the suffocating temperature that can only be eased by the rain that makes the transition between seasons so difficult.

I woke up to the buzzing of a LINE notification. As I groggily grabbed my phone to silence it, my mood went from annoyed to elated when it wasn’t simply a photo, but an announcement from Maison Book Girl that they had a brand new MV out! This title, “Raincoat and the Bird Without a  Neck”, per the official English translation, is on their single “Elude”, slated for a June 20 release. Notable from the LINE announcement was the collaboration with Japanese fashion brand ANREALAGE (Cococo was a fan, according to the interview we conducted a year ago), whose love for stark monochromatic pieces and geometric silhouettes goes hand-in-hand with the signature visuals of Maison Book Girl.

The Once and Future Alloy

This is a post that’s taken most of a week to come together, and I have a feeling that it’s still insufficient, so bear with me, don’t get mad if details are left out, and please do enjoy the tracks to follow.

So. Alloy. They’re pretty good! They’ve also dealt with their share of turnover, as one would expect in idol. Par for the course! Also, if you happen to be a fan of Alloy and/or specific members thereof, completely and irrevocably devastating. Why anybody likes idol, I will never understand.

Nonetheless, the whole point of this is that Momoko’s graduating, like imminently, and the group dropped a couple of tracks to commemorate. Last of the current regime: Continue reading

Your Homicidols Weekender #80

Good morning, friends! I don’t know about where you are, but here, this weekend — Memorial Day weekend — lasts three days and is the unofficial kickoff to summer. I am apparently doing lots of things over these three days! Neat. None of those things are apparently going to live shows. Bummer.

This is a really good Weekender, though, and I hope between it and a couple of other things, you’ll have plenty to entertain you up to and through Monday. Also, play the exquisitely good Fun and keep Kerrie happy, and brace yourself for a summer that’s already feeling like it’s going to be a great one.

I Fear the Sun

Hey. Hey! Very cool French idol group Amaitsuki is getting the chance of a lifetime:

Just a Random Collection of Words in the Friday Fun

What was last week’s theme? Oh, right. There’s been so little word on what happened to Yuimetal that I was beginning to think nothing was wrong and she just never existed.

We need to talk about BiSH. Continue reading

GANG PARADE Really Is the New WACK Hammer

Though “new” is kind of a misnomer, I guess, given that the former POP has been on such a great roll for months and months now, but this companion piece to “GANG 2” still makes the grittier take feel fresh:

I Wasn’t Kidding, You Should Pay Attention to Toricago

I didn’t get a chance to share this one yesterday, but my oh my have I been listening to it.

Like, I just warned you all about Toricago the other day, all but beating you over the head with my very hot take that this is a group that’s got it, and here they are with just the latest exhibit:

Thanks for existing, bud!

Under Beasty Made It to Their Fourth Anniversary

This started off as a Weekender joint, but I had one of those moments where you realize that you’ve been forgetting about idols that you really like simply because there’s too much dang idol and other stuff, and they’ve been a little off to the side of the radar, and whose fault is that but your own? Exactly.

Under Beasty, The Super-Indie Idols Who Could, one of those groups that I’ve pretty much always and pretty much always will champion if for no greater reason than their ability to prove that even the totally self-produced can make this wild game work, have had a pretty good ride of things over the years. They’re not even super-indie anymore, having hooked up with actual management along the way and gotten a strong enough budget to release stuff like this and put on decently sized one-mans.

So consider this a celebration of them, in a way, because this right here is what I wanted to Weekender:

But there’s more going on, and they deserve a fuller post. Continue reading

Do Whatever You Have to Do to Prepare Yourself for Minna no Kodomo-chan, Because You Aren’t Yet Ready for This

Good lord, what a thing to step into first thing on a Wednesday.

Minna no Kodomo-chan, winners of the Corenament, owners of some of my very favorite idol-related music to date, a teen chika power duo if there ever was one, an entity that manages to loom immensely despite the cumulative height of its members being about 8′ (it’s the backboards, I’m sure), have an album that’s out today. You have no doubt endured my barely contained hype, as I have been all kinds of excited since the day that it was announced, and I was practically giddy yesterday when they made it clear that an MV was going to happen this morning.

Friends, did it ever:

If you’re wondering why it took me well over an hour to get this out, it’s because I wasn’t in a place to heart react immediately, and I just spent most of that time struggling to get to where I needed to be to finish this post. And, sometimes, time is gift — you can think things through and mull them over and force-listen to a piece a few more times. What a gift, man. Continue reading
